Bad video-call lighting is almost always the same problem: a single overhead bulb behind you, a window doing whatever the weather decides, and a webcam trying to correct for both. The fix is a soft light in front of your face at roughly the same colour as the room — which is exactly what a monitor is, once you stop showing a spreadsheet on it. This page turns any display into that light, with a colour temperature from candle-warm 1900K to cool 9500K and a brightness you can actually control.

Why a screen makes a good webcam light

Light quality on camera comes down to size and distance. A large source close to your face wraps around it and produces soft, gradual shadows; a small source far away produces hard edges and deep contrast. A 24-inch monitor at arm’s length is, in photographic terms, a big softbox at close range — which is why screen light tends to look flattering with no diffusion at all.

What a screen is not is powerful. It works as fill light: softening shadows under the eyes and brows, lifting your face out of the background, and giving the camera enough signal to stop boosting gain and introducing noise. In a bright room at midday it will barely register. In a normal indoor setting it is often the difference between a grainy silhouette and a clear picture.

Where to place the screen

Open the tool on the display closest to your webcam, then move that display slightly to one side of the camera and a little above eye level, angled toward your face. Off to one side keeps some shape in your features; dead-centre light is even but flat. Below your face is the direction to avoid — it is the classic torch-under-the-chin look, and a laptop screen sitting low on a desk falls into it easily. Raise the laptop, or use a second screen you can position freely.

Check your framing after every move. The lit panel should not appear in the shot unless you want a visible coloured glow behind you, and it should not be so close that it reflects as a bright rectangle in your glasses. If you wear glasses, tilting the screen a few degrees usually kills the reflection without losing the light.

Choosing a colour temperature

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin, and lower numbers are warmer. Roughly: 1900K is candlelight, 2700K a warm household bulb, 3200K a warm indoor room, 4200K a neutral middle ground, 5600K midday daylight, and anything above 6500K reads as cool, overcast, or deliberately stylised.

The number matters less than the match. Your webcam sets one white balance for the whole frame, so if a warm lamp lights one side of your face and a cool screen lights the other, the camera has to compromise and your skin ends up orange or blue. Pick the temperature closest to the dominant light in your room — or remove the competition by closing the curtains or switching off a lamp — and check the result in the camera preview rather than by eye.

Setting brightness without wrecking your eyes

Start low and raise the brightness only until the shadows on your face stop being distracting. A brighter screen is not automatically better: too much output flattens facial detail, produces hard reflections in glasses, makes the eyes water over a long meeting, and can trick the camera into darkening everything else in the room.

The right level depends on the panel. A large bright monitor may only need a mid setting, while an older laptop screen might need to be closer as well as brighter. Never stare directly into the lit area, and if you get eye strain or a headache, drop the brightness or stop using the screen as a light. It is a convenience, not something worth suffering for.

Using it with Zoom, Meet, Teams, and OBS

The tool produces light and nothing else — it never touches your camera, so it works identically with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, Discord, Slack huddles, OBS, and any browser recorder. Open your video app first so you can judge the real image while you adjust, since a mirror will not show you what the camera’s processing is doing.

While you are there, deal with the two things that undo good lighting: a bright window directly behind you, which turns you into a silhouette, and a cluttered background that competes for attention. Keep your eyes in the top third of the frame, put the light in front, and let the room fall away slightly darker.

Fullscreen, and keeping control

Set your temperature and brightness first, then press Open fullscreen so the entire panel becomes the light source with no browser interface glowing a different colour. Press Escape to come back, adjust, and go again. The hide-cursor option stops the pointer sitting as a small dark dot in the middle of your light. On phones and some mobile browsers fullscreen behaves differently, but the page still works as a plain coloured screen.

When to buy a real light instead

Can a screen replace a ring light?

Which screen should I use as the light?

The largest one you can place near the camera. A second monitor or a tablet propped beside the webcam works better than the laptop panel you are reading, because you can aim it without disturbing your view. A phone works at close range for a quick fix.

Why do I look orange or blue on camera?

Your webcam is setting white balance from the mixed light in the room. If the screen light is much cooler or warmer than the lamps around you, the camera splits the difference and your skin shifts. Move the screen temperature closer to the room light, or switch the room lamp off entirely so one source dominates.

Does this work with Google Meet, Teams, and OBS?
