A single, uninterrupted colour field is the only way to see a display rather than read through it. Text, icons, and photographs are exactly the kind of visual noise that hides a small defect, which is why every panel test starts with flat colours. What blue is particularly good at is exposing warm-coloured faults. A red or green subpixel that has stuck on will glow as a small warm dot in the middle of a cool field, far more visibly than it would against white. Blue leaves red and green subpixels nowhere to hide.

Scan slowly from corner to corner rather than staring at the centre, and check the edges and corners where backlight bleed and pressure marks tend to appear. Do not press the panel while inspecting it — pressure creates temporary patterns that look exactly like a fault. If a mark stays in the same place across blue, red, green, white, and the black screen, it is on or in the panel rather than in the image.

A blue screen is not a blue screen of death

The phrase sends a lot of people here by accident. A blue screen of death is what Windows shows when the operating system hits an unrecoverable error: a blue background with a message, a sad face, and a stop code such as MEMORY_MANAGEMENT or IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. It appears without being asked and usually forces a restart.
